New Semester Syndrome,
What should we do?

Hello. I am Hong Ji-yeon, Director of Yon Oriental Clinic.

Although COVID-19 is still ongoing, school is officially back in session. With the start of the new semester, children are entering group life in earnest.

My own children also went to school today. Last night, they couldn't fall asleep until late. Perhaps because it had been a while, they tossed and turned for a long time, saying they were both excited and nervous.

Why Spring?

The new semester, why do children get sick so often?

At the beginning of a new semester, as children face a new environment of group living alongside seasonal changes, we often see an increase in children feeling under the weather. They may suddenly say they feel unwell, become more irritable, or act clingy, complaining of pains here and there even if they look fine on the outside. In fact, some may show mild cold or gastroenteritis symptoms, or their rhinitis may worsen.

In Korea, the new semester begins in the spring. Due to the characteristics of spring, there is a large daily temperature range, and external stimulus factors like pollen and fine dust increase significantly. Environmentally, the number of changing factors also rises rapidly, such as school life, new teachers, and new friends.

Because of this, it seems natural for children with weaker immune systems or sensitive temperaments to feel psychological and physical distress. While these may be temporary symptoms, if they are repeated and persist, they could negatively affect the child's growth and emotional development.

Overcoming New Semester Syndrome
POINT 01

Emotional empathy and support

Supporting children who are feeling tense and stressed and providing warm empathy is the top priority.

POINT 02

Thorough personal hygiene

Basic illnesses should be prevented through proper personal hygiene management, such as wearing masks and washing hands.

POINT 03

Adequate sleep and nutrition

Balanced nutrition, sufficient sleep, and appropriate physical activity are necessary, as these are the foundations of building immunity.

POINT 04

Building immune resilience

One must cultivate the body's internal buffering capacity—the fundamental immunity—so as not to react sensitively to external stimuli.
