Checklist for when
your child has a fever

Hello, this is Dr. Hong Ji-yeon of Yon Oriental Medicine Clinic. I’m back with more health stories after a while.

Writing this blog post took some time because I personally oversee every step of the consultation, herbal medicine formulation, and decoction process. Please understand that this is due to my desire to carefully handle every detail personally.

Mid-March has passed, and April is just around the corner. With the new school term, more children are coming in with rhinitis, mask-related breakouts, and colds. Today, I’d like to talk about "Fever and Traditional Korean Medicine Treatment for Colds," which is one of the things that worries moms the most.

Fever & Immunity

Why do we reach for antipyretics first when a child has a fever?

As an oriental medicine doctor and a mother myself, I know those feelings all too well. When a child develops a fever, it is natural to feel extreme tension and panic. That’s why many parents turn to fever reducers first, hoping to make the child comfortable.

However, when the medicine wears off, the fever often returns—a phenomenon known as "rebounding." This happens because antipyretics do not remove the root cause of the fever. In traditional Korean medicine, a "fever" is considered a healthy response where the body's internal immune system is fiercely fighting against an external virus (pathogenic factor).

If you forcefully lower the fever with medication while the body is busy fighting the virus, it is like ending the first round of a fight and entering a rest state. When the medicine wears off and the body tries to heat up again to continue the fight, the medicine is introduced once more, which can actually cause the cold to drag on. Since a fever means your child is working hard to boost their immunity, it is not ideal to force it down too easily.

The one thing to watch out for is 'hydration'. High fever is dangerous when the body does not have enough fluids to cope with it. It’s like a kettle burning if there isn't enough water inside. Therefore, regardless of the type of fever, keeping your child hydrated with lukewarm water is of the utmost importance. (※ Note: If a fever lasts for more than 3 days, it is a dangerous stage that could lead to complications, so medical consultation is essential.)

Check List

7 things parents must check
when their child has a fever

Checking this list before visiting our clinic or a pediatrician will help make the diagnosis much more accurate.

CHECK 01

Check the time of fever onset
Check whether it started in the morning or afternoon. If it started in the morning, it may be an infection, necessitating an examination of the ears, throat, and lungs.

CHECK 02

Check hand and foot temperature
Check if hands and feet are warm or cold when the fever hits, and try massaging them. The colder the extremities, the shorter the antipyretic rebound time.

CHECK 03

Check the speed of fever rise
Note if it spiked suddenly in a short time or rose gradually in stages. This is a key point in distinguishing between a common cold and the flu.

CHECK 04

Bowels and appetite
It is very common for children to develop a fever simply due to constipation or indigestion. Please be sure to check their bowel movements.

CHECK 05

The child's condition
Children who play well despite a high fever tend to recover faster, but if they are severely lethargic or struggling even with a mild fever, treatment may be slower.

CHECK 06

Check accompanying symptoms
Check for clear/yellow nasal discharge, cough pattern (phlegm, dry cough, etc.), diarrhea, or abdominal pain. Recording the sound of their cough is very helpful.

CHECK 07

Check pulse (Optional)
If you use a pulse check app to measure their pulse for 1 minute, we can judge the child's prognosis more accurately.

Treatment

Is it possible to treat
fever and colds at
an oriental clinic?

Yes, except for very severe
bacterial infections, we can treat them safely.

Traditional Cold Treatment
POINT 01

Accurate Diagnosis (Cold Damage vs. Warm Disease)

It is our principle to first accurately distinguish between a common cold and the flu to establish the correct treatment direction.

POINT 02

Customized Herbal Prescription

For colds, we primarily use dispelling agents; for the flu, we focus on clearing heat and detoxifying according to the child's constitution.

POINT 03

Convenient Dosage Forms

We actively utilize insurance-covered herbal medicines and granules, and we also offer a variety of custom herbal decoctions to make taking the medicine easier.

POINT 04

Fever Reduction via Digestive Stabilization

Since indigestion is a frequent cause of fever in children, a light herbal digestive aid is often all that is needed to bring the fever down.
