Yon's Talk

My face feels strange.
What should I do?

Hello, I am Dr. Ji-yeon Hong of Yon Oriental Clinic.

Recently, we have seen an increase in patients visiting our clinic due to facial conditions. I suspect this may be due to muscle contraction caused by the cold weather, combined with the high levels of fatigue many people are experiencing.

Many patients come to us complaining of stiffness and a hard sensation despite having undergone nerve block procedures, others experience frequent twitching of facial muscles, or conditions commonly known as Bell's palsy. Today, I would like to talk about 'Bell's palsy,' a condition that frequently appears in Oriental medicine dramas.

Explanation of Bell's palsy
Symptoms

Do you have these symptoms?
Major symptoms of Bell's palsy

Many people think of Bell's palsy as a condition that only affects the elderly, but that is not the case. Recently, we are seeing it more frequently in young people in their 30s and 40s.

Symptom 01

Eye does not close fully
and tears keep flowing

Symptom 02

Facial asymmetry
and liquid leaks when drinking

Symptom 03

Loss of taste sensation
unable to properly taste food

Symptom 04

Tinnitus (ringing in ears)
or pain near the ear area

Causes

Causes and Classification of Bell's palsy

Bell's palsy can be classified into 'Central' types, caused by brain-related conditions, and 'Peripheral' types, occurring outside the brain. Central cases are medical emergencies that require immediate testing and prompt treatment.

Peripheral cases occur without underlying brain disease and are triggered by exposure to cold energy (Han-sa), extreme fatigue, stress, or weakened immunity. These are mainly divided into two types: 1) Bell's palsy and 2) Ramsay Hunt syndrome, which occurs as a complication of shingles.

About 70-80% of all Bell's palsy patients have the standard Bell's palsy. The good news is that while it depends on the severity of symptoms, Bell's palsy generally has the most favorable prognosis. In the case of Bell's palsy, symptoms often worsen initially before gradually improving, and the timeline for recovery varies based on the individual patient's health status.
